The idea of Conception Lodge 8346 was inspired in St. George's Lodge, firstly at
a banquet table after a practice probably by Wor. Bro. G.B.W. Otway. From there, conversations occurred over the telephone and often outside the 3072 temple and between it's members. There was a general consensus that a new lodge would offer a wider number of meetings, having in mind the membership numbers of 3072 at that time.
There was a further consensus about the ritual to be used as the alternate to the Nigerian which was then in use in 3072. The Nigerian contained more explicit mechanics than a previously used version but subsequently did not satisfy Grand Lodge's recommendations for the Emulation Working.
The background of these talks was against a tapestry of unease in the entire community. Indeed, several members were either threatened of felt threatened. This was because there was also a backdrop of effort, co-operation, exchange of constructive ideas and much practical work that the inauguration of a lodge incurs.
The District Grand Lodge of Barbados was sounded out and the counsel of Wor. Bro. C.B Lawless was invaluable.
To an extent therefore, the symbolism of the Conception crest provided a symbolic haven of stability against the prevailing environment. Whilst there were many disruptive episodes occurring during this entire period, it cannot be understated how Masons, and particularly the PAST Masters pulled together, combining their individual strengths to achieve the success that was apparent when the temple doors opened at 5:38 p.m on Thursday 18th, February 1971.
The founding members had every reason to be proud of their stalwart endeavors. A great deal of correspondence, arrangement and invitations was expended to arrive at that moment - and a great deal afterwards.
The assiduity of Wor. Bro. E. De Vere Archer, Secretary of St. George's 3072 cannot be forgotten in this respect.
